They were fully grown, each about 3 inches in diameter.
I am thinking about it.
Introducing my new angels! Including two PARAIBAS!!!!
I ended up trading 8 baby lemon plecos for 4 of them. (2 paraibas, pearlscale blue ghost and pearl scale blue marble) fell in love with the humongous pearlscale koi and threw in $20 on top of the 8 plecos and took him home to. The photo does not do his size justice!
So ya....it was almost an even trade. But I couldnt leave the koi behind. Which is odd because I am not normally attracted to koi. He was too striking. His size and his pearlscales made me want him.
That is awesome!! Congratulations!
Why do the first and last pictures look like scales are different or missing?
The first and last are the paraibas!!! That is what makes them unique. They have irridescent blue patches! I love them!!
Very nice Biz! So happy for you!
Ahhhhhh, ok! That is new information for me. I know you are very excited to get these gems. I am excited for you.
Ah ok. So those guys are the new Angels . Congrats on getting them and I see what you means about the Koi
Wow! Now I see why you were so excited to get them - they're are beautiful!!!!!
Just read through this thread. I always love seeing you angels Biz, Congrats on the new angels though. They are certainly gorgeous, hopefully the paraibas are a pair and you get them spawning
Very nice Liz!
Hi guys! Just want to update the thread. Several of you are aware of this already if you are in the happy chat room. lol
But two days after getting the new angels I posted on Friday, the pearlscale koi and pearlscale blue marble spawned. This evening will be 48 hours since the eggs were laid. So they will start hatching soon! I really REALLLLY hope I finally have a pair of pearlscales who actually produce pearlscales! Third time's a charm?? Right??? The first two didn't do it for me...which goes against all my research. So there pair had BETTER!!!
I don't think koi and blue marble will offer me any offspring with cool coloring (unless they have some cool shared recessive genes), but I will be ecstatic if I at least get pearlscales!!
Right now these 5 giant angels are QTing in a 46 bow. So The other 3 boys are having to be in this tank despite the eggs. I put a ton of tall plans in the middle to break things up. And luckily, two days in, the 3 amigos are doing just fine. The aggression from daddy koi has been no more than just a little gentle nudge here and there. In fact he even likes to hang out on the boys side of the tank. haha. He leaves the girl to tend to the eggs and goes and hangs with the boys. Typical man!! haha!!
The dynamics in this tank are not what I expected. Five giant angels, in a new tank, too small for them, with lots of options for "territories", 4 boys and a girl.....EGGS.....this all sounds like recipe for disaster to me! But thankfully, so far it has gone pretty smoothly. One of my non-breeding goals is to have 4 boys in a 55 and see how they do with no ladies around.
So once QT is done, the plan is this....The koi and blue marble will be separated. I want to breed her with either the pearlscale blue ghost, or one of the paraibas. Then the remaining 3 boys, and a 4th from the stock I already had, will be put together in a 55 display tank.
Sadly, One of my favorite tanks sprung a leak over the weekend and it isn't worth repairing. It was already a rehabilitated tank to begin with. It lasted me over a year and had very well established plants with runners all over. Having to uproot it all sucked. But even worse, I lost valuable real estate right after getting 5 giant angels. This 46 gallon that leaked (I have three 46 gallons...well I HAD 3 anyway) was supposed to be used for the Blue marble pearlscale and one of the blue males. But now that can't happen. I was already cutting it close with space BEFORE I lost this tank. So, now I am really in a bind. I am just desperately searching for a nice, low priced, used tank to replace it, because I am not in a financial place where I can afford something new. Hopefully it happens sooner than later. Its spring cleaning time!! So...its time for people to pull out their old dusty (but in good shape) tanks and put them on sale!
They probably are good with each other because they have lived together for a while. You might get some "rusty" kois out of the pair (rusty pearlscale kois that is). I'd offer you one of my spares but you are too far away (and you don't likely have space for a 4ft tank?).
Thanks, that's kind of you! Unfortunately this spot is just BARELY too small for a 4 foot tank. (and you are too far away haha) Its unfortunate because 55 gallons are the easiest used tanks to obtain at a good price. I'd say over half the tanks listed are 55s. But I have to stick with a 3 foot tank as much as I'd prefer a 4 footer!!
And I agree, the fact that these guys all grew up together is a huge part of it. But I felt strongly that the change of environment (an empty bare bottom tank to a planted tank), along with cutting the group down from 13 to 5....and eliminating all but one female.....was going to change the dynamics whether they grew up together or not. Wouldn't you think??? But luckily so far so good. In fact I am seeing some fin growth on them. They had pretty nice fins already (considering the environment they came from) but they were still a little raggedy. I am happy to see some added fin growth in my tank. I bet my water is significantly better than his was.
I successfully have six angels in a smaller tank without harm coming to them and only one of them wouldn't be considered an adult by its age. They don't have torn fins or aggression to each other, they have a load of hiding places but mostly stay out in the open. Only if the female is being picky or the males don't already have an established "top dog" would they have issues. I have a four inch female that has been a jerk for a month in a different tank, she settled down when I added a marble pearlscale (not sure if male or female, but it is almost the same size of the jerk female).
I have my 58 in use (it is a 3ft tank, but it is under my sister's care with one little glitter marble angel in it with her schooling and ram pair), so i was leaning towards the 60 (4ft, taller than a 55), the 150 is too big also lol (4 ft, 300+lbs just the tank heavy as all get out dry).
I'm curious to see how the angel group does. I always see groups of Altums, how do people pull that off? Are they always just in massive tanks?
Altums aren't the same as scalare (the common aquarium fish) because they actually like to start together when they get bigger, scalare get territorial when they get bigger and don't enjoy schooling.
Well the stupid pearlscale angels ate their eggs on day two. I am totally used to it. But...I will never understand it!! Why care for eggs diligently for 2 full days just to eat them????? Why not just eat them immediately?
I have said a few times lately (on the other site) That I have taken a break from breeding angels to focus on breeding plecos. But to be honest.....it hasn't entirely been by choice! I have 3 breeding pairs right now who spawn on a regular basis and almost always eat their eggs on day two. That is the popular day to do it. RIGHT BEFORE hatching. Ugg. I haven't bothered to remove eggs and raise them myself because it just wasn't worth the trouble. And I also have lack of space at the moment, so it just isn't a smart idea. SO I guess you could say it HAS been by choice, because if I seriously wanted to, I could raise the eggs by myself.
Speaking of....one of those pairs was in the tank that leaked. And they had just laid eggs the previous day. I decided to put the eggs into a 10 gallon on the off chance that they hatch. I say "off chance' Because I was genuinely thinking that the boy in this pair was infertile! Because it appears every single egg turns white before the eat them all. Every single time. But no...I have now confirmed that he simply has bad aim. Because there were several eggs in the 10 gallon that DID hatch. SO, I took over as the parent and I removed the wigglers from the cloud of fungus covered eggs. I used a medicine dropper and very carefully placed each of them onto a different leaf on a different plant. haha. I am committed! haha They developed their eyeballs yesterday and should be free swimming in a few more days. I would love to raise this nice small batch of like 20 babies. I haven't had long fin babies in over a year. And mom is long fin. So I should get a few of those at least! For the record, both of the parents in this pair are my own offspring. They actually have the same dad (a koi), but different moms. For those of you from the other site who may be reading this and might remember.....the dad in this pair is my biggest "smokoi" and the mom is Black Mamba's daughter. Black mamba was a veil tail black marble, pretty basic, but she was the most beautiful angel I have ever had!
Going back to the new angels. Now that the koi and blue marble have failed, I am thinking about doing some shuffling. I want to pick my pair from that group. I would like to do the pearlscale blue ghost and pearlscale blue marble. So I will be giving them maybe a temporary 29 to spawn in. I would have given them the other 46, but sadly it leaked. I have to find a new tank FAST, or else I will have to rehome a lot of fish in the next week or two. I'd like to avoid that at the moment!!
I also have to do some shuffling of these giant angels due to the onset of some further aggression. (which is strange since the eggs are gone now) I wanted to give them a full month in QT, but I don't think that will work. So wherever they go, it can't be with current fish that have serious value to me. JUST INCASE!!
awesome! hope to hear more about your parental responsibilities and how the wigglers are doing!
Yaaayyy!! Glad you finally got them Biz! They are very pretty! Good luck on the pairing and breeding, and I hope you find a tank to replace the broke-down one soon!!
Same here! And if you start a different thread on them, I'd love to follow!
I did end up doing some shuffling last night. I moved the Koi into a different tank and now the other 4 have seemed to perk up. So that is a good sign. It will be very interesting to see which of the 3 males she chooses now that her Koi partner is gone. Who will be the new alpha male? Cuz that will likely be who she chooses. Hopefully things don't get too ugly as they establish this new "line up". lol
I need to get that broke down tank replaced asap!! Things have been so stressful after losing that real estate.
